by Usman Zahid on February 4, 2010

The much awaited and as expected the decision on Dr.Aafia Sidqui was given by the 16 member Jury at New York. The jury found Dr. Aafia being guilty of seven charges; mainly revolving around the murder attempt of U.S servicemen. The decision was twenty-four hours delayed by the jury, for the reason best being known to them and between the preceding two members of the jury were also changed. During the case two (2) witnesses were brought to the court by Dr. Aafia’s lawyers and also a videotape and the jury was also told that the forensic tests proved that Dr. Aafia had no indulgence in the case and that the case was made on false ground.

The charges against Dr. Aafia were that she tried to kill U.S Marines and FBI inspectors in Afghanistan, during an investigation by using rifle M-4 of an American soldier. Dr. Aafia was being investigated at that time by the Americans on for having some secret chemicals and the method of making a dirty bomb. [click to continue...]

Forgotten Sister Aafia?

by Sana Saleem on March 21, 2009

I hate opportunists they repulse me.Unfortunately I live in a world clustered with such species. People who use others misery to gain their vested interest. Once the interest is done so is the artificial sympathy. Now that the impeachments done we don’t hear any shouts for Dr.Afia? and the likes of her?. Ironic as it is there has been no change in policy. There has been no significant update on Dr.Afia’s case. The media has ‘better’ things to cover and worry about. As if five years of royal ignorance wasn’t enough?.Every now and then we hear updates through various sources.

aafia-siddiqui-608

A recent story in dawn reveals her poor health and mental status. She had been diagnosed of psychosis and her mental condition isn’t stable. She keeps forgetting places, events and people. Dr.Afia siddiquis case is the ugly state of humanatarian rights in our country. There has been no significant step taken towards her release.

According to a recent story in Dawn :

In the New York jail, Dr Aafia said, six masked men stripped her, tied her hands behind her back and made a video film. A woman covered her with a blanket while she was being taken back to her cell. She even stopped seeing her counsel to avoid being stripped every time she was taken out for a meeting. She was later shifted to the Federal Medical Centre, Carswell, Texas, for tests and treatment.

If this doesnt bring us shame God only knows what will !. If this doesnt open our eyes and force us to demand her release nothing can. Is this matter not worth a protest eh?.For those among us who woe to be sheer patriots I would like to know where exactly is the patriotism now?.It is tragic how such barbarism is overlooked. Dr.Afia’s arrest and treatment is the worse violation of humanatarian rights. A sister whose forgotten by her nation. A name that is no longer the headlines. Should we allow ourselves to forget the brutality and move on?

Dr.Aafia Siddiqui Update

by Sana Saleem on August 16, 2008

Dr. Aafia Siddiqui’s matter has been highlighted and picked up by both foreign and Pakistani Media . Frequent updates about her case progress and her health conditions have been sought by the Pakistani authorities . In a recent request to the American authorities Pakistani officials have demanded a detailed report on Dr. Aafia’s recent medical examination . This is a constructive step towards showing interest in the welfare of a Pakistani citizen illegally held by American agencies . The case hearing however has been delayed till September the 3rd .  However chances of her release seem greater (inshallah) . The recent meetings with Pakistani authorities revealed her conditions which were means of comfort for the disturbed family . Dr.aafia’s brother was also allowed  to visit her under extreme security , he mentioned her condition to be extremely weak and her being under strong influence of sedatives at the time of meeting .

Dr.Aafia’s attorney has taken a strict approach towards revealing the whereabouts of her children . She has strictly forbidden Dr. Aafia about mentioning anything regarding her children’s  condition and whereabouts. This has been opted as a strict security measure towards preventing the children . Strong hopes are bound to  the safe release of Dr.aafia and her children . The team here sees Dr.Aafia’s release as a break through for all those detained by unfair means .  Lets hope and pray that her release becomes the doorway back home to many other innocent Muslims being detained under horrendous conditions.

Dr. Aafi siddiqui : Woman of courage

by Sana Saleem on August 12, 2008

Dr .Aafia Siddiqui’s bail hearing has been postponed till Sept 3rd . The judge has also ordered the authorities to arrange for Medical check up for Dr.aafia within 24 hours . The Pakistani authorities that went in to meet Dr.Aafia were surprised to see her courage and the strength with which she had still managed to appear as normal as possible . According to authorities she has inquired about conditions in Pakistan and about her mother  and family .She also asked for a copy of Quran and some Halal food.

Dr.aafia had appeared in court on a wheel chair , recovering from a gun wound which the Americans alleged was caused when she tried to attack an american soldier. Aitizaz Ahsan a leader of the lawyer’s movement was also present outside the court where dr.aafia arrived.

According to sources:

Ms Siddiqui’s current condition is “weak” particularly because of the gunshot wound she received during an alleged scuffle with US security personnel. Her lawyers have rejected the US claim, saying that she was too weak to scuffle and snatch a rifle from an army officer, as the authorities claim.

The lawyers claimed that since she was not given proper medical treatment, they fear that her wound became infected. She is extremely weak and had to be wheeled to the court last week as well.
