State Bank of Pakistan Increased the Discount Rate by 200 basis Point

The State Bank of Pakistan increased the discount rate by 200 basis point to control the record inflation of SBP Logo25% in the country. As a lay man what i think is that the current inflation is mainly powered by inflation in food items. The problem with food items is that that they are either being hoarded or smuggled to Afghanistan where the traders are getting a better return. I don’t understand how the increase in interest rate will impact that specific part of the overall inflation? Can someone gives his professional opinion on this?

KARACHI: State Bank of Pakistan Wednesday increased the discount rate by 200 basis points, tightening the monetary policy further in a bid to arrest the rising inflationary trends in the country.
Governor, SBP Dr. Shamshad Akhtar announcing the interim monetary policy here said the country is facing multiple challenges and that ‘we are going through an extraordinary crisis’.
She blamed flaws in food supply system for the rise in food inflation, adding, increase in wheat support price will help overcome this problem.
Dr. Akhtar said the rate of Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose to 35 per cent while the core inflation climbed to 21.7 per cent and the rate of inflation soared to 25 per cent.
The government has assured of not taking more loans from the central bank and the government’s dependence on SBP for obtainment of loan is on the decline.
Governor SBP observed that the bank deposits have registered growth following the steps taken by the central bank in this regard.
‘The tightening of the monetary policy bore fruitful results and during the last four months the economic indicators reflected figures that met our expectations,” she claimed.
She said the 35 per cent increase in the import bill is not tolerable. (source: The News)

Death Penalty for Misappropriations/Embezzlement of National Wealth

Saudi Arabia prescribed death penalty for the offense of drug smuggling. Pakistan should prescribe death penalty to those involved in monetary scandals or misappropriation of funds from the National Exchequer. Passing of such law from the Parliament of Pakistan would restore the confidence of the investors and those who wish to bring their wealth from abroad. Instead of begging in the whole World or getting more loans on more strict conditions, the Government should reform its own institutions and system of governance. The boldness of the culprits is mainly due to this fact that there is no strict punishment in the laws of Pakistan. The Government should come up with a clear policy on the financial management. Actually, those who are responsible for the enforcement of the laws lack firm commitment. Getting more loans means, more money shall be misappropriated/embezzled in the future. What is the guarantee of the transparency of the transaction and management in the future? Unless and until the punitive laws are not made more stringent, the condition would never become better. Law and order situation is not the reason for the flight of capital because in every country, the atmosphere is not so ideal but in our Country, the State Institutions need complete overhaul. Government should give top priority to investigation in the recent flight of foreign exchange reserve and should give result not in months but in weeks. Corruption has got deep roots in our society and people feel no shame in looting the National Exchequer.

Actually, from the date of issuance of NRO, the people felt a dark future in our country. Each one of authority determined to do corruption with the hope that his case would be washed by such measures. No one was given deterrent punishment for his plundering the national wealth. Every one considered the national wealth like the milk of his mother breast and sucked without any measure. Those who have much regard for this country feel a unique kind of agony because those who plunder it go abroad and live there with complete peace of mind while leave heaps of miseries for those living in this country.

In future every person who wishes to contest election should also declare that he has no foreign assets and if later on found then should be given death penalty for falsehood. At present, all those who have any position in the Government should sell any foreign property and bring the amount to the Country. They should also abolish their foreign accounts for the sake of the future of this Country.

A greater part of the wealth is spent on wine and whores. The Government should first bridle its own people from doing any such activities. It seems to me that those relating to the financial matters have hatched a big conspiracy against the present Government that is why in a short span of time of the present Government the financial condition of the Country deteriorated that the President of Pakistan demanded from the World one hundred billions dollars. It shows that he had realized the situation very early.

Death penalty is the only solution otherwise; the situation would worsen in the future. Good governance is not possible only with speeches but the people in the Government will have to sacrifice everything for the Country. The Government should not put more burdens of loans in the helpless people who are already groaning under the price-hike, load shedding, flour crisis, terrorism etc.
