I have always been filled with overwhelming despair when I read the newspaper, and for the past few months now, I’ve stopped reading it. What’s going on, what law has been passed and who is getting swindled; I really don’t know. My participation in an event like PYLC opened my eyes to matters which I had never seriously considered, or at least never deliberated about a possible solution for them. I cannot relate the experiences of all the 8 committees, but the issues discussed by the Finance committee have been getting so much attention recently, so for those of you who’re interested, I feel compelled to share the salient points of the exhaustive debates here.
The tax generation problem has been around for much longer however, and whereas I lacked thorough insight in the predicament, my team members shredded the prevalent tax collection system to pieces. Every aspect was postulated and deliberated upon. [click to continue...]
Around 2 weeks back, a friend asked me if I wanted to take part in a conference with her. It seemed interesting so I agreed. I hadn’t really taken part in a lot of conferences and decided to give it a shot this time. I didn’t know what exactly I was signing up for, but thinking too much can mess things up sometimes, so I got myself registered and waited for 12th February to come.
After a couple of days I found out we had to choose a committee for ourselves, and since we had registered as a team, we would all be in separate committees. Now my 2 friends were a part of a student-run organization and conferences weren’t really a new thing for them. I, on the other hand, was completely bewildered as to what I was supposed to do. We had to send in a solution paper as well before the 8th of Feb on the 2 topics assigned to each committee. I went to the website to get the details and opened the Finance section-the committee I had been placed in. [click to continue...]
In one of my classes, we were talking about how the mind of a human being works. One thing that was of particular interest was the concept of ‘Cloud of Comforting Beliefs’. This basically meant that, we as human beings hold onto something so tightly that the line between possibility and absoluteness becomes blurred. We grow up thinking a certain way, throughout our lives we continue to think the same way. It is comforting for us. It is a solace to know that one day we will get rich, we will become business tycoons, we will become a high achiever. These are just some commonplace beliefs that all of us have since we are children we all want these things and despite everything that happens, we continue believing that this stuff will eventually happen one day. PTCL has expanding its product offerings and this time they have hit the corporate customer segment. A couple of days ago, PTCL introduced its latest TelePresence (TP) service to the corporate customers at a two-day demo at its newly developed TelePresence facility in Lahore. Terror struck again yesterday at a volleyball ground in the southern district of N.W.F.P , Lakki Marwat. Recent reports confirms death toll of 94 people and hundred injured. New year celebrations were marked with the first suicide blast of the year in the ill fated village of N.W.F.P.
N.W.F.P have been the main affected province of the so called War on Terror. Other provinces may have been the target but the majority brunt was sustained by N.W.F.P. Of the total 150 bomb blasts and 81 suicide bombings, 51 suicide bombings and 84 bomb blasts occurred in Frontier Province.
In spite of so many bombing and damages to public lives and property, nothing has been done by the federal government to cope for the damages sustained by the province. Instead the federal government has allotted 2 billion ruppees to Sindh Government to cope for the damages caused by the bombing and loot on 10th of Muharram. What happened to N.W.F.P? Where is our share of money to compensate for the lives and property for the last 4 years? Why isn’t the hue and cry of the people heard to declare N.W.F.P as a war affected province? Where is our share? What happened to the sacrifice of people of SWAT who spent 2 months in tents in this scorching heat of summer. Why are we being negated?
These actions creates anger and frustration within the people and the same situation is exploited by the foreign enemies and the result is what you are seeing now in Pakistan. Its because of the injustice that creates agony among people against the government. There is an uprising in Balochistan. The same situation is happening in N.W.F.P. Why because the rights of the people are being negated. If such actions continue to take place, i am afraid the situation may worsen in the near future.
On the eve of 2nd December, 2009 when President Obama spoke about Afghanistan’s policy; it was hard to determine the difference between former President G. Bush and current President Obama. It seemed more of rhetoric than anything else. The same old cock and bull story; but a little twist in the tale was:
The people and governments of both Afghanistan and Pakistan are endangered. And the stakes are even higher within a nuclear-armed Pakistan, because we know that al Qaeda and other extremists seek nuclear weapons, and we have every reason to believe that they would use them.
The surprising element here is that despite repeated assurances by Secretary of State and by other U.S officials present at the Capitol Hill that Pakistan’s Nukes are in safe hands; has been rebutted by the President. An alarming point that President mentioned was the increase in the drone attacks in Pakistan; irrespective of what the Pakistani government says; and in case they say!
What came as a more surprise to many was the announcement made by the President that, U.S will be increasing its troops by 30,000 in Afghanistan and will start withdrawing by July, 2011. In U.S Congress and Senate, Democrats are strictly against the increase in number of troops in Afghanistan, whereas Republicans are against the withdrawal of troops in any time soon. So such an announcement has made both the parties confused and Obama has made his life difficult because now he has to convince both the parties to let go their staunch stance over Afghanistan.
