Punjab Assembly demands to ban late-night packages from telcos; do you agree?

by Mansoor Ehsan on February 3, 2010

Punjab Assembly has passed a resolution, demanding federal government to ban late night packages  introduced by telecom companies. The base point for the resolution was to save future of youth who presumably are the major targets of these late night packages. Almost all of the mobile network operators offer cheap rate on-net calls these days.

The demand was raised in Punjab Assembly’s session in a resolution presented by Samina Khawar Hayat, an MPA of PML (Q). The resolution recommends that the federal government direct mobile companies not to promote “cheap rate, late night packages that alter societal tendencies”. The document says, “Because of such mobile packages … the young generation, particularly students, remain busy texting and talking over the phone the entire night, without caring for their studies, health and sleep. These packages are not in line with social and moral values and customs. A ban should be imposed on all such packages. The resolution was passed unanimously, with the speaker praising Samina for tabling the document.

How do you take on this resolution? Should such packages be banned in your opinion? How does such packages effect the youth? Post us your comments and experiences!

It is now clear that mobile phones have become problems for almost every walk of life. It is being felt that the use of mobile phone should be restricted to certain persons and not to be used indiscriminately. Now coming to the introductions of concessional packages of late night use of the mobile phone, particularly Ufone, Telenor, Mobil Link and Warid are trying to excel from one another by launching new packages for th mobile users. The late night package is a clear step to encourage students to communicate with their friends or co- students late nights, and speak freely and also fixing time and date of meeting with their friends. without caring to the health and studies. Students ar e more interested to extend and express friendships and speak freely for hours. The resolution passed by the Punjab Assembly to ban late night packages is a very appreciable step and I am in complete agreement with the ban of late night mobile packages.

I fully agree with it. At least some one who took the step. But I am sure federal Government will not take any step.

yep its a good idea, wasting time talking/sms’ing at night rather than sleeping is a big waste. Health problems aside, the social problems being created especially crank calls & SMS would be reduced to a big extent.

I say, sleep and let others sleep peacefully as well :)

The Punjab Assembly has passed this bill through which telecom
companies would be requested to take back their late night packages
offered to their customers. The Lady MPA who presented this bill in
the assembly was not right in her idea. I contradict with it. The
facilities are not always either right or wrong. Their usage makes it
right or wrong. For instance, a huge variety of Porn Sites are
available on the web which is accessible to anyone, anywhere in the
world. For the such reason, should we also block the internet service
in Pakistan as this may spoil our young generation? No! We should be
guided the right way of the usage of the facilities we are provided in
this world which has become a global village because of these
facilities. I request honorable Ms. MPA to review her idea.
