Bhong Mosque [Picture Post]

I had been thinking since many days to share a jewel from my area :) well, not specifically my area but broadly speaking I hail from the same district. So here I am with a picture post of Bhong Mosque. Memory of Bhong Mosque visit is still fresh at my mind when I was quite young. Even though at that times I had not that much intellect (hey i was kid at that time :P ) to appreciate the demeanor of this great architectural piece but I certainly enjoyed the glitz of colored glass and countless small mirror pieces which produced an amazing effect.

Located in the village of Bhong,Tehsil Sadiqabad in the district of Rahim Yar Khan, Bhong Mosque took 50 years in completion. The mosque is located at the distance of 200 kilometers from Bahawalpur and 50 kilometers from Rahim Yar Khan and is well known for its exquisite design and architectural beauty with gold leaves carved for the intricate decorative patterns and the stylish calligraphic work. The mosque was commissioned by Sardar Rais Ghazi Mohammad Indhar, a wealthy landlord, in 1932 to be the jewel of his new palace compound, which already included a mosque and a prestigious Madrasa (religious school) and was completed in 1982.

Inspired from the stylistic approaches from Lahore, Iran, Turkey and Western architectural colonial elements of 1940s, hundreds of craftsmen took part in its construction. Modern and traditional materials and crafts were used like
teak, ivory, marble, colored glass, onyx, glazed tile, fresco, mirrors, gilded tracery, ceramics, calligraphy,synthetic marbled industrial tile, artificial stone facing, terrazzo, colored cement tile and wrought iron.

Bhong Mosque has been awarded the prestigious Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1986 while Sardar Sardar Rais Ghazi Muhammad has posthumously been conferred upon the “Sitara-e-Imtiaz”.

Thanks! Yups anny it’s a place worth visiting. Our country is very beautiful and there are slot of pLaces that are not highlighted in our media. Pro Pakistan try to share all such places with our readers.
