New Petroleum Prices – Burden the Masses!

by Usman Zahid on December 2, 2009

At the end of the Eid and the month; the government decided to give the nation yet another Eid and winter gift and that was the increase in the petroleum prices; which one way or the other will increase the overall expenses of the masses. There seems to be no relief for the masses in this country; the government seems to have forgotten the fact that the masses are not as rich as our politicians, bureaucrats and elite is!

The traveling fare has already been increased by 10% by the transporters; so in a nut-shell everything will go up by 10% other than the income of the people. And not to forget that, the government under IMF’s program, will increase the electricity and gas within 2 to 3 months. The price hike is massive; the sugar is not available, every summer is struck with the lightning of load shedding, and according to many experts soon the ‘Atta’ and ‘Rice’ crisis will hit the market. It is getting bad to worse!

The government is nowhere to be seen; or maybe the government is too busy looting the masses. This probably has been the worst government in times to come for Pakistan; each and every indicator whether for our economy or for our foreign policy or on law and order is showing our government’s failure. I think enough time has been given to this government to perform but unfortunately it seems that the government is either not interested in doing something or has no control.

I have a series of questions that why each and every burden is passed on to the nation? Why the government has not curtailed its expenses? Why bullet proof Mercedes have been ordered for the entire cabinet? Why President House and Prime Minister House are the biggest defaulters of electric and gas bills? Why our Police stations have been allowed to get away with electric bills worth billion of rupees? What is so important in the President House that it has an annual budget of Rs 390.86 million (and this budget does not include the payment of electric and gas bills)?

Our leaders and elite has been sucking the resources of this country for more than half a century now and yet our masses vow for these leaders and vote for them and bring them in power and then sit in our cozy rooms and criticize these leaders!

With the new regulation, that OGRA (Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority) independently can increase or decrease the petroleum prices; depending on the market and other factors. Their already has been a series of debate over the petroleum Development Levy or the Carbon Tax; they all have been a tool for the government to rob the masses.

If we are such a poor nation that we cannot afford to give subsidies then we definitely cannot afford to go under an IMF program with the highest interest rate ever charged to any country by IMF.

All we need is sacrifice from every section of the society similar to their social strata; according to which rich people need to make more sacrifice than the poorer. But who will make the rich people sacrifice?

I think we are indirectly still giving subsidies but only to the elite and people sitting in our government; in the likes of free electricity, gas, cars, houses, traveling and petrol. Do they even deserve all of this? What so special are they doing for us, for which they should be rewarded for such compensations? Why don’t our political leaders lead from the front, by cutting their expenses and living like an ordinary person; only then they will realize that what masses go through when the price of petrol is raised from Rs 61.63 to Rs 66 per liter and how these increase in prices effect the masses and their households. And I am sure that if our leaders cut down their expenses and live like an ordinary person; we might not even need these raise in petroleum prices!

Dear Mansoor Ehsan ,
Don’t blame HCJ, do you think that its his duty. I think no, its our duty to choice the members who later on formed a govt. So instead of blaming of anyone come out and choice the persons, who really deserve for this.

yet another problem?? Things in my opinion will not change till the majority that has been silent for years will not speak UP!! It is time that we all unite as one and let the silent majority speak. We have to make our voices heard!!

Gas prices fluctuates all over the world by each day so it is impossible to cap the prices ,we don’t produce it,we depend on others therefore there is no point to Cry.It is duty of Federal Minister of Science & technology(or any other ministry) to make it possible to introduce “electric Cars” less pollution ,safe, economical & low rate of accidents due to its low speed. But who is gonna Cut the RED Tape?

Americans analysts use metric known as energy intensity, which basically measures the amount of oil used in relation to the size of the economy. The energy intensity of the U.S. economy has actually dropped by about 2% a year every year since the early 1980s. In the next couple of years Deutsche Bank expects it to decline by around 3% as people buy more fuel efficient cars and respond in other ways to the high prices of 2004-2008 and as government conservation measures kick in.It means that Americans are finding new ways to explore energy rather to depend on tradaitinal petroleum products, may be in decade a so GCC will again turn into Desert.
A growing number of experts are saying that oil prices will remain well below $100 a barrel as the economy remains fragile and efficiency measures kick in.
“The world will never run out of oil,” Deutsche Bank analysts wrote in a recent research note, echoing the old logic that the Stone Age didn’t end because the world ran out of stone. “If the oil age does end, it likely will be because we become more efficient and simply use less petroleum.” It’s this “becoming more efficient” idea that the Deutsche Bank analysts use to predict even lower oil prices in 2010 than now - an average of $65 a barrel next year compared to nearly $80 currently.
