Despite Pakistan being locked in an offensive against TTP terrorists bordering Afghanistan, which US officials call the most dangerous region in the world- fashioners in Karachi, shrug off security fears and celebrated Pakistani Fashion Week 2009. Karachi the southern city of 14 million people, known for its glitzy malls and thriving cafe culture  is known for its love for fashion. The event showcased 32 local designers over the four-day event. So we bring pictures from this show , courtesy Associated Press and Dawn.

The lamest excuse to go through with such things. Yes, there locked in combat with the Taliban. You’d think they’d find some other way to defy them.
:Yes, we’re going to defy the Taliban by exposing skimpy clad women:
Great way to represent a Muslim nation. Throw down a fashion show which goes against every traditional thinking under the pretence of fighting the Taliban. Yea, right.

I guess some people are going to be blinded and only see what they want. Lli saw skimpily clad woman, I a non-Pakistaning, international correspondent saw a rebellion. Lli talks about the fear of taliban in her eyes, I saw hope in the eyes of the young designers. Rizwanullah had spend six months doing each peice by henna, showcasing his age old traditions, even Taliban would have been proud of it.
In a land seeped in history and heritage, iPakistan’s today is mired by rampant fundamentalism. Pakistan is viewed as the face of Islamic terrorism and repression. On one hand the Taliban and Al Queda blow up blow their heritage and put a dark shroud around the women. On the other hand tech packs are swiftly replacing traditional design, machines chasing away silken skeins and the rich fabric of culture & creativity is sacrificed at the altar of ‘outsource’.
As the countries minimal infrastructure fuels global retail, and its boundaries support international security policies, the price is being paid by the everyday Pakistani. Whilst you see them as definant, I see these design icons as Modern mahatmas. I wish you would go beyond the skirt lenth and realize that the seeds of change are sowed by pre-thinkers and artist. I guess no one realizes that its been a fighting battle for them, since 2007, when they drew up a blue print on how society and culture will guide the way back to normalcy and reveal a hereto unseen soft face of Pakistan to the world.
Kudos
