Pakistan is listed at 10th in the Failed State 2009 Index.  Placed ninth among all countries last year in terms of its overall achievement, has improved its position only by a notch – it is placed 10th in the index for 2009 published in the July-August issue of the journal.

The ranking is done on the basis of the following factors: demographic pressure, refugees/internally displaced persons (IDPs), group grievance, uneven development, economic decline, delegitimisation of the state, public service, human rights, factionalised elites and external intervention.

The top 10 failed states in the latest list are: Somalia, Zimbabwe, Sudan, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Iraq, Afghanistan, Central African Republic, Guinea and Pakistan.

I wonder what makes you to put such bigotry at pro-Pakistan blog. Specially where India is shown quite stable in compare to China… is it really credible data base? I reject it. The reality is that Pakistan’s enemies have a certain set of mind and we Pakistan are not going to buy their treacherous tactics.

On personal level i believe the index doesn’t matter much (although it has grey areas to start with – geographic and strategic depth? i.e.), Pakistan has been very high on this list for a long long time – Yet by the grace of ALLAH we are strong enough to stand as a nation as oppose to what media projects.

Jeech, it is better that such topics are posted and rejected – rather than not posted at all, cos than viewers can see this news on other anti Pakistani sites, where it couldnt be rejected.

If we include data on social crimes such as theft and sexual harassmement etc, the ranking will be different. Such renkings and measures can always be questioned. No matter Pakistan is facing some hardtimes these days, my dear country will soon get out of it and will the world will see the real face of those who are igniting these crises.

the reason for the rankings can be checked by clicking on each country where each factor has been described in elaborate detail..

India is stable compared to China.. Its a democracy you see and a very successful one at that.. China has problem but the outside world cant know because there is no free media.. China is doing better than India on comparison but more development brings in the desire for democracy in China and then they will be in trouble.. That is where India has the edge.. The changes are only for the better in India..
Regarding pakistan, Jinnah must be turning in his grave.. Have fun guys in a failed country… :)

well Mr Ajmal Khan
now lets begin with the slumdog thing.Aren’t any slums in pakistan.Plz don’t say no. Now about the separatist movements yes there are those little poor creatures who want to dream of it, but u know its mostly in parts of north east and kashmir. Now abt the north east the most militant grps there are hardly consist of 50 80 people and they generally use the pretext of independence to harass the locals and to extort money only, 2 or 3 are really a threat. And i would also like to add that in there(N-E) mostly they have been now weakened.

now about pakistan , Well u know what pakistan is virtually at civil war and is having a hard time with taliban.and there is instability in there which is one of the parameters. And also the list is not made by any indian agency .It was made my some independent grp.

I don’t think the point of the index and the article is to say that people in one country or another are better or worse. I think the point is to show to US policymakers and the community at large where the “flash points” in the world are. Of course no country wants to be written off as a “flash point” and much less a “failed state”, but see that it is based on a simple combination of metrics that these researchers did not make up for themselves. What they decide how they are synthesized. I don’t have the article (or even that graph) in front of me, but I don’t think there’s any convoluted or underhanded weighting system between the factors. The fact is that Pakistan has a fast growing, young population, lots of refugees, deligitimization of state (look at Musharraf, look at bhutto’s assassination, look at fighting/bombing in Islamabad, look at Swat, the mess in NWFP/FATA). Pakistan may not have “failed” but it is in crisis. It’s no Somalia for sure, but it does seem to be in a trickier situation than even Bangladesh, which is poorer and in turmoil. I think Pakistanis are strong and brave to not flee their country and to try and fix it. Really, try… And those countries who can help, need to help, or at least not make it work.

Does n’t matter what their statistics say, they have their own criteria like NASDAQ ,Tsx when ever they want they peak the graph. Our country has its own identity and importance ,right now we are fulkrum of world power game .Keep in mind our stategic location, we worth more than we think, whole world politics is arround us,our institutions are playing game very carefully & tactfully, we are in very good position of bargaing, kashmir,Urmuchi,Taliban, afghanistan, khalistan, tamils …you name it.so my freinds keep your heads up.
@Anoop—-Ooops..Don’t worry about Jinnah, still at least one more pakistan will emerge from your south?

I rolled on the floor laughing and the same time felt pity. I read an article few days back which talks about the “Pakistani culture of denial and conspiracy theories”. 9/11 done by jews, 26/11 done by hindus, pakistan is a super power – please take a break. Unless the country comes out of this mentality and stop listening to jokers like zaid, you are going deeper and deeper into abyss.

India does have insurgency problems, but it is not as big as it is made out to be in paki press. India has a functioning democracy and has a decentralized setup with democratic institutions which takes care of the most of the grievences. Only the jehadists are causing some problems but then people with jehadist mentality are a pain in the butt everywhere.

guys
it`s just a stupid list.
know what Anoop i guess we must not compare our situation with that of china because it`s a well developed country and government at the end of day is listening to the pleas just like our government does and doesnot fulfill any of the pleas there while our government does hear our pleas but very slowly even when compared to democracies.
pakistan before taliban attack was a little more stable but i know they would come out of it just as we are gonna come back out of naxalites
