COLOMBO: Sri Lankan state television broadcast images Tuesday of what it said was the body of Tamil Tiger leader Velupillai Prabhakaran, as the island’s president proclaimed victory over the rebels.
The images were shown after the Tigers claimed the guerrilla leader was still alive and well, and said they would continue fighting for a separate Tamil homeland despite President Mahinda Rajapakse’s call to unite the nation.
The video showed the upper section of a corpse which was dressed in camouflage fatigues. The back of the head, which was resting on a bloodstained newspaper, appeared to be missing.
The face was intact, with the eyes wide open, and bore a clear resemblance to the stocky, moustachioed rebel leader. Also shown was a dog tag with the marking ‘0:01′ and a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) identity card.
We are a government that defeated terrorism at a time when others told us that it was not possible,” Rajapakse said in a nationally televised address to parliament.
“The writ of the state now runs across every inch of our territory.” Under international pressure to reach out to the Tamil minority, Rajapakse also vowed that a political solution to the island’s deep rooted ethnic divisions would be found.
“All should live with equal rights. They should live without any fear or doubt,” he said. “Let us all be united.”
His speech had been shadowed by a Tiger statement insisting that Prabhakaran was not dead and that his fight which he began in 1972 would go on.
“Our beloved leader is alive and safe. He will continue to lead the quest for dignity and freedom for the Tamil people,” the rebels’ international relations chief Selvarasa Pathmanathan said on the pro-rebel Tamilnet website.
Pathmanathan went on to accuse the government and military of “crimes against humanity,” saying senior LTTE leaders had been shot dead after being invited to negotiate a surrender.
But the army chief, General Sarath Fonseka, stated categorically that Prabhakaran’s body had been identified a day after defence officials reported he was gunned down trying to flee government troops.

I find it really derogatory that you choose to blame any one or anything without proof and ride on emotion. Raw is and never was involved with LTTE of any sort and suggesting that is quite off the mark especially when Sri Lankan governemt has clearly stated that they do not believe RAW to have anything to do with it .. Instead of publishing emotion-ridden articles, i suggest they carry a credible source.
If you have a look around, this ‘fear of raw’ is created to mask the criticism of ISI internationally.
Although the cause of LTTE does have supporters in Tamil Nadu , with many political parties , especially dravidian parties are pro- eelam ( homeland for tamils )and do play on the emotions of tamil for votebank politics. However that is far from the violent methods adopted by LTTE.
Your article was in the right spirit but i felt it hit below the belt by slipping in a ’slap to RAW’ type comment as if its a well-known fact when in truth its only the pakistani media which play these stories to divert or deny attention from the real issues.
Looking forward to an amicable discussion..
Thanks
Longlive nationalism,
Parbhakarans death is not the end of Tamil freedom movement from Sri lankan occupation, people live people die but ideologies never die, struggles never end with the death of any leader.Alfateh is still alive even Yasser Arafat is not alive,Hamas is active even Shaikh Ahmed Yaseen is not alive.Whatever was the ideology of tamil tigers chief but if their national identity will not be assured by Sri Lankan government they will never surrender even their all tigers die.South asia is a region where people live and die for their leaders,Parbhakaran was not a philosopher that no one will replace him, tamil elem is fertile it will give birth to hundreds of Parbhakaran.
Please Dr.Sahib, don’t be so emotional, you should know about Very Famous Saying “Ghar Ka Bhedi Lanka Dhaiy” same thing happened in Parabhakaran Case.Tetley Tigers were about to seige colombo but it did’nt happen.
India’s strategy to be the monopoly power in the region is to destabilize Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Indian RAW trained the tamil terrorist groups like LTTE, PLOT, EPDP in training camps in Tamilnadu provided them weapons and monitory funds. In 1987, LTTE leader prabakaran was surrounded by Sri Lankan heroic forces, but Indian Prime minister Rajive Ghandi prevented capturing him by threatening Sri Lankan government a possible Indian attack to Sri Lanka. Thousands of our Sri Lanka people and our heroic forces died for decades for India’s inhuman behavior. India and it’s people cannot escape from the curse of their involvement in this.
Pakistan, our true friend in the region helped us to defeat the LTTE without expecting any gains. As a Sri Lankan I pay my tribute, honor and salute to Pakistanis on behalf of all the Sri Lankans. I know all the Sri Lankans know who are our friends and not. Pakistan, China and Russia are in the top list of our true friends.
Forever the friendship of Pakistan and Sri Lanka!
Thank You Mr.Suraj for your good wishes and comments.Do you know who eliminated prabakran and his team ,at the last moment when the tip was confirmed that LTTe is going for final round and going to blood bath colombo?India wanted to keep the seige longer. No doubt some very innocent dead but parabhakran made a human shield there was no choice.Any way we know that sri lanka is one of our trusted freind who helped us in 1971 war with India ,our Airforce planes were top up the fuel from colombo air basis. We don’t forget Our Friends and our ENEMY.
