Collabrating With the Enemy?

by Sana Saleem on May 14, 2009

The role of the Armed Forces in Pakistan has been marked notorious in many aspects. Which isn’t much of a surprise coming from a  country with a deep rooted history of Dictatorship and Martial law. Many have blamed the dictatorship to be the cause of crippled democracy. The army today is operating in swat. An area heavily filled by Taliban extremists. the same Taliban were once created in collaboration with the United States of America. The same collaboration is now seeking a removal of the cults they bred several years ago.

A recent article in Los Angeles  Times  suggests that the ‘drone’ attacks in Pakistan’s northern areas were done with close co-operation of the armed forces. The phenomena is no rocket science and therefore it doesn’t take much of an effort to believe these speculations. However the situation suggests that we continue to fall prey at the hand of foreign powers. the same foreign powers help created these lunatics. In the backdrop of the speculations should we really be feeling at ease about the military operation in Swat?.

Personally I dont seem to find another way to combat extremism than the current military action. This isnt a trial to bad mouth the army or the ongoing o-peration. This is a mere opinion that if this mode of action was taken in the past we wouldnt be facing the crisis today. We cant overlook the fact that these millitants poured out of the sky. Many have lived here for long and perhaps have families. In this condition how safe is it to believe that the operation will completely cleanse the country. As many fear this could become yet another breeding ground for terrorism. Leading them to become more resistant and tactful in teh next regime. I believe so because its to far fetch to assumme that the refugees who for decades have now settled firmly will be completely eradicated.Despite all the odds I have hopes that we will be rid off these elements soon. Most of the nation’s concerns are now focused on the victims of war. This shouldnt be taken as an opportunity to create a mindless army. time has come where the blame game should stop. The people should be well informed on how much ‘co-operation’ goes in favor of America. I call for the the death of  ‘America our enemy’  theory and a snap back to reality.

Dictatorship is not the cause of crippled democracy in Pakistan. These are political parties and politicians who are solely responsible for it. Political parties could not or let me say did not try to settle down their differences and made martial law inevitable. Armed Forces in Pakistan has never been backed by the ‘political stability’ in the country. Army meddled in government affairs only when it was left with no other option.

“In the backdrop of the speculations should we really be feeling at ease about the military operation in Swat?.”

Pakistan Army is not the bunch of idiots. Army knows very well where to collabrate , with whom and also to what extent. Operation in Swat is not a ‘pleasant’ adventure for Pak Army , esp when we have had enough experiences in WANA and North Wazirastan. Operation Rah-e-Haq is a difficult but timely decision . :-)

“Personally I dont seem to find another way to combat extremism than the current military action”

Me too :-)

@ Nayni: Welcome to the Blog! I happnen to hold the opinion that the Army should be at the borders. No situation can call for a shift of such magnitude , more than half of the 62 years of Independence the Army has been in control. Also almost every dictator came with the promise of being a temporary fixture but ended up staying a decade. Atleast democratic Government cab be rid off with in 5 years.

Also I dont know if you read the post carefull but no where am I trying to prove that the army are idiots. The martyrs giving their lives in the war are no fools. I or anyone else has no right to take their mrtyrdom away frm them or disgrace them. What I am saying is this should have happned way back.

I jus hope taht this doesnt become another breeding ground for terrorrist!

So you mean that army could not take timely decision ????

Even now army is being criticised for taking an action against militants when the later is unveiled ‘fully’. How an early decision could have satisfied the people???

‘I jus hope taht this doesnt become another breeding ground for terrorrist!’

InshaAllah !!! Allah Khair kray ga :-)

I don’t understand all this “they should’ve done this long time ago” nonsense. Nothing in Pakistan is as simple, mullahs in media and politics are very very loud. Just check out the speeches by Mullah Imran Khan and Mullah Qazi Hussain Ahmed. These guys are pro status quo. Its never easy to confront the mullahs in this country. They are loud, proud and vicious. They don’t budge, they don’t listen.
