According to new report released, the global mobile games revenues have increased by 20% to reach US $5.4 billion in 2008. The increase in the mobile games revenue has been powered by the tremendous growth in Asia specific and African region. Indian sub continent and China stands out as two major areas for the growth in the mobile games revenues. In 2008, the growth in download volumes in North America and Western Europe was roughly around zero percent while it actually decreased in Japan. The situation could have been worse in North America and Western Europe as Java based downloads showed significant decrease but that shortfall was covered by the remarkable amount of download volume generated through the Apple Ap store for the iPhone. The report also notes that the level of gameplay per download via iPhone was highest among all handsets.
According to Dr. Windsor Holden “Apple has provided an innovative device which enables developers to create smooth, compelling, visually attractive games for the mobile user, together with a business model offering a highly competitive revenue share for developers.â€
Other highlights from the report include:
• The Far East & China is the largest regional market in terms of games downloads; the Indian Sub Continent will overhaul Western Europe to become the second-largest such market by 2010.
• More than 50% of games downloaded by 2012 will be funded by advertising
• Operators in Europe and the US need to reduce their demands on game revenue share to encourage developers.
There is a significant potential in such avenues and if properly exploited, organizations can greatly benefit from these opportunities. In countries like Pakistan, the focus on Mobile Games industry can prove as a stimulus for growth in both software and telecom industry. There is enough potential available and being in the region witnessing the maximum growth, i think it is the right time that entrepreneurs in the area should focus on the Mobile Games industry. Telecomasia/Juniper
