Supreme Court of Pakistan has given its rulings and declared Nawaz and Shahbaz Sharif as ineligible to contest elections. I wonder if this will impact their current positions as well? In case yes, Shahbaz Sharif will have to step down from the position of Chief Minister of Punjab. This will also intensify their involvement in the upcoming Long March of Lawyers on 16th March, 2009. This will have major implications on the political scenario of the country. What you guys think about it?
ISLAMABAD: The three-member Bench of Supreme Court has disposed off Sharif brothers’ electoral eligibility case by declaring them ineligible for contesting elections in its two-line short order announced here.
Shahbaz Sharif under this verdict has lost his seat in the provincial assembly and being no longer member of the Punjab House, he is no more Punjab chief minister, as SC has annulled the earlier notification about his being chief minister.
This case was under hearing of the SC three-member Bench headed by Justice Musa K. Laghari for the last eight months, in which, the Attorney General of Pakistan, Latif Khosa giving his arguments said that Punjab chief secretary and speaker were not the party in the case. Attorney General said that all the judges have taken oaths under the constitution and talking about the oath of the interim constitution was irrelevant.
He said that Nawaz Sharif’s proposer and seconder could become parties in the case if the court permits them and their becoming parties was not necessary. He further said that it was the discretion of the judge to withdraw from the Bench and no one could direct him to pull out.
On conclusion of the arguments, after a short break, the Bench disposing off the Sharif brothers’ eligibility case declared them ineligible.
Following the verdict, Sharif brothers’ lawyer, Akram Sheikh told media that the decision was as expected, as the government was giving dictation to the judges. He said that Sharif brothers were declared ineligible on the orders of President Zardari. He said that the judges would be made accountable on the Day of Judgement. Akram Shiekh said that now it was up to the people to decide if the verdict was on merit. He said that he couldn’t comment on the incomplete two-line judgment. This decision would be presented as bouquet to President Asif Zardari on his return from the China tour.
ML-N workers in sizable number were present on the occasion of the announcement of verdict raising slogans in favour of long march and Sharif brothers. Security arrangement remain tightened in the capital city here. (Source: The News International)

WOW
Zabardast
victory for the people of smaller provinces.
Yes it does eff their present position specially of Shahbaaz Shareef. The moment he is declared ineligible…He ceases to enjoy the MPAship..and for a CM its must that one be a MPA.So technically he is no more CM punjab. As my moving fingers type this comment he has left the CM office without Escorts.
its a biased decision for sure.
Well PML (N) will surely nominate a new individual for the chair Chief Minister Punjab.
Once again Supreme Court shows that it is not Independent at all in last year and before. while i was reading a comments and see how people think that its a victory of smaller provinces. Any how anybody has its own thinking but in my view its a once again a failure of a system, failure of institution and a failure of democratic forces and i am not feeling any hesitation to say that its just because of one person again who want to be more powerful then a dictator Gen Musharraf…but i am not hope less at all because we grown up in this structure and facing these type of crises since 25 years and Inshah Allah sooner or latter we have a change in Pakistan…so people’s Keep Hopes Alive for the best
Well if not bias I would rather say, now the true face of politicians of this strata will be seen by us how amateur and boorish they are , where as my constitutional knowledge is concern an elected representative can not bear the same office twice therefore I don’t find any reason for this commotion . Moreover our politicians are like a sticky bomb ready to obliterate our beautiful HOME PAKISTAN.
Supreme court’s biased decision has actually reavealed the real face of democracy prevailing in pkaistan along with the current form of judiciary which we are ashamed of!!!!
I, and my family WERE strictly PPP supporters since my grand fathers time. Our PPP died when Benazir was murdered, and further when her post mortem was refused, and every thing washed away. She was a great politician, and so was her father, although w=were still politicians and mistakes may have been there too.
I am sad to hear that ML are angry with PPP, but the “PPP” that exists today is not PPP, it is Z.O.P (Zerdari Obama Partnership), and I hope the ML supporters can also see that it is not PPP /PPP supporters or at least not Benazir’s PPP that has done this but it is purely Mr 10% who is responsible for this action.
I hope that PPP supporters like myself who can separate Mr 10% from PPP, join forces with ML supporters against this biased injustice, come out together with the lawyers, as Sharif bros have also shown their support for the lawyers and judiciary. I hope that PPP supporters themselves can see that they don’t want to see such dark injustice being done under a govt that they voted for in the first place. At least I myself have always thought that since 10% came into power, he is more interested in his MOONCH than public issues. He should have definitely not done this, as the coalition govt was a good sign of democracy in Pakistan, and PPP still had the main parts of the govt power anyway, and they should have been already satisfied with that. I guess Mr 10% now needs to be renamed Mr 99%.
General public incl PPP supporters should rise against things like these, and instead of attacking each other, should attack govt buildings etc together with joined forces as it is unacceptable. At least I do NOT want to support a party that will do stupid things like these not to mention not stand up against the drone attacks etc.
These problems can not go away until Pakistani public is ready to stand up against these continuously corrupt leaders. Every one of us.
.
Mr 10%, you have made PPP supporters like us ashamed of our support for you in the past.
@All Pakistanis,
Our country, our leaders and hence requires some action from ourselves.
Its really sad that the one man who was making difference and was becoming nightmare of lazy and dishonest government machinery he desrved to go like others who tried to work for this unthankfull nation
I really respect Shahbaz Sharif efforts, and I appreciate his work in Pakistan in last year, its not my own comments, Shahbaz Sharif work very hard in last year, and people feel its true feelings regarding nation, now he is under one political game, I hope that he will come back to serve Pakistan
