A US top diplomat in Peshawar was attacked by gunment today. Luckily she escaped unhurt because she was riding in a bullet proof car. No one was critically injured in the incident except a rickshaw driver, who was hit by the diplomat car and sustained minor injuries. The attack highlight the fact that the gunmen had an intelligence about the movement of the US diplomat and were able to run away safely after the attack. An investigation has been launched into the incident. It is also worth mentioning here that US Consulate in Peshawar is highly guarded and the adjoining roads are closed for security concerns. PESHAWAR, Pakistan, Aug 26 (AFP): Gunmen opened fire on the car of a senior US diplomat in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar Tuesday, but she escaped unhurt, police and US officials said. The diplomat, Lynne Tracy, was on her way to the US consulate in the city when a vehicle suddenly appeared and blocked the road, local police officer Arshad Khan told AFP. A man in the intercepting Land Cruiser rolled down the window and opened fire with a Kalashnikov rifle, but the diplomat remained unhurt, he said, adding that Tracy was travelling in a bullet-proof vehicle. The diplomat’s driver threw the car into reverse and hit an auto rickshaw, he said, adding that the rickshaw driver suffered minor injuries. The attackers fled the scene, Khan said. Later, the US consulate issued a brief statement saying: There was a security incident in Peshawar this morning involving a US consulate vehicle and three employees. There were no injuries and minimal damage to the vehicle. We are coordinating with Pakistani authorities investigating the incident, it said. An official who requested anonymity said the US diplomat was accompanied by her driver and a security officer. Pakistan’s greatest challenge is in neutralizing the religious fundamentalism and becoming a more secular society. Once that is done, economic and social progress will follow automatically.
Too many crimes and injustices have been committed in the name of Islam, driven by misguided interpretations of the Quran. It is time to modernize Islam and the nation of Pakistan.
Islam will remain same forever and its very much in line with the modern practices but then the very word “modern” is subjective. Islam will never allow certain things and that will not change forever.
I will agree with you on the fact that certain people are using the name of islam to malign it and we need to tackle them with sincerity. The sincerity has to come from our allies as well rather then them supporting the Indians and Afghans sitting in Afghanistan and using their consulates to fund the terrorists in Pakistan to bring instability on our Western border. This very motive gives a chance to the Indians to keep our one lakh army busy on our western front and away from the border on the east facing India. America has to pull back its support from the Indians working against Pakistan interest in the tribal areas.
Anyways, i am sure sooner or later the problem will be fixed as Pakistan can not afford such situation for a long term.
i rili don’t belief india has an interest or put (much) effort to destabilise pakistani regions. I don’t buy that story. I admit india is very interested in pakistani politics tho.
religions are a form of dictatorship, also islam, as such it is not acceptable for the rest of the world when muslims just say, oh no we will never change or islam will never change. Every people in the world has to be willing to contribute to progress, most of the world is not going to accept severe indoctrination, and these (if u so want) areligious and antireligious sentiments
(of freedom) will never again disappear. Personally i am convinced that given time the muslim world will also find a synthesis for that and leave ethics where they ought, in filosofy and theory for fans, be they call themself religious.
The west sick mentality still has a lot to do with the general fight against corruption and for equality (of sexes, people and the development of nations). Indeed not what the neocons want, but definetly what many people feel.(meaning it is not only or even “that” sick)
in fact islam nations are more hierarchic where we want a model where maximal input of individuals is realised, no matter wich family, clan or people they are from and how they would represent these. That is sth that doest exist in formally or strictly structured hierarchy. Pakistan also should wake up to a political reality, not drift away in some archaic religious dream. The rights of the muslim nations are drawn because of the discriminated situation they are in,
wich is a sad truth, otoh there is a definite claim from the world for modernity,
muslims should take care not to stay the target of a campaign against bigottry and superstition, mind you the authoritarian systems, the kings and sheiks, the general elevel of power accepted by muslim populations, islam certainly dont give us only nice impressions.
