Should muslim men uncover their ankles?

by Waqas on August 11, 2008

This topic has been in the air for a while, but no definitive answer is existing out there. When questioned upon why it use to be practiced at that time that most common reply is, because they use to walk to the mosque and clothes would get dirty.

Now this is very easy to understand that why it was practiced and the answer is very logical no doubt, but I believe that Islam is for all time and is applicable in every age and time. I needed to do some research, I knew some basic advantages like it keeps you down to earth because people who wear baggy clothes do feel superior to others. Personally i have been there.

Now something which was suppose to be just to keep your clothes clean or make ablution easy shouldn’t have any punishment. So would something this basic have any consequences ?

It says in Sahih Al-Bukhari Volume 7, Book 72, Number 678

Narrated Abu Huraira (RadhiAllaahu Ánhu): Rasulullaah (SallAllaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, “The part of an Izaar which hangs below the ankles is in the Fire.”

I question you Muslims, why would that part hanging below be in fire when it is just to keep your clothes clean. Imagine, just to keep your clothes clean your feet below the ankles are in Fire, does that sound Logical or something that Ar-Rehman (the most merciful) would do ? Sounds Illogical

But with reference to this Hadith what we did establish is:
Point Number 1. The part of clothing (Izaar) below the ankles is in fire.

The reason why people wear baggy clothes hanging below their ankles and are dragging are to feel good. They feel more secure and feel proud, any person who has studied even a little about Islam would know that Pride is something that Allah Subhana Wa Ta Aala does not like at all and it says in Sahih Muslim Book 24 Hadith 5195

Ibn ‘Umar reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) having said: He who trailed his garment out of pride, Allah would not look toward him on the Day of Resurrection.

And this message is repeated in:

Sahih Muslim Book #001, Hadith #0195
He would not look at them and there is grievous torment for them: the aged adulterer, the liar king and the proud destitute.

Sahih Muslim Book #024, Hadith #5195
(Already Quoted above)

Sahih Muslim Book #024, Hadith #5197
He who trailed his lower garment with no other intention but pride, Allah would not look toward him on the Day of Resurrection.

In Sahih Muslims alone it says Allah would not look at you if you wear your garments lower than your ankles out of pride. Which leads us to establishing Point Number 4. Allah Subhana Wa Ta Aala wil not even look at you if you wear clothing below your ankles with the intention of pride.

I have given a few references to why a Muslims should wear his clothing over his ankles in this time and age. If anyone wishes to refute or add to this topic is more than welcome, but do come with some authentic quotes from either the Quran or the Hadith.

I hope Allah Subhana Wa Ta Aala guides us, if we are at the wrong Path then show us the right path and let not prode come in the way of our learing. Hope this has helped.

i dont think u need to show ur ankles. listen carefully, the quran is without a doubt from Allah but the Ahadith has doubts. the ahadith were made 250 years after the nabi (saw) died. so in that time ppl have added extra hadith which r not from the nabi (saw). If u have to show ur ankles and if u cover them it’s a grave sin (haram) then why doesn’t it say so in the quran. The ahadith has doubts but the quran doesn’t. also another name of the quran is “FURQAN” (criterion).
