Google Lively - Google Online Virtual World

Google LivelyGoogle has launched its online 3D virtual world with the name of Google Lively. Google Lively is a Google response to Second Life. The mechanics of the Google Lively are same as that of Second Life but Google embedded their other products in that virtual world. You can create avatars and personalized room where you can watch YouTube videos on the virtual computer and can even check e mails on the virtual internet.

Google Lively can be embedded in Facebook and personal blogs and it can be accessed after downloading a software from the site. The room can be embedded by pasting the HTML Code in the personal blog or any other site.

The Google requres the user to be at least 13 years old before accessing the site and there are some adult roos as i can see from my own test trial of the product. Moreover, the rooms are not interconnected like Second Life but we can access each other rooms by individually clicking from the site where they are at display. I wonder why Google want to jump into every area where it see business potential. Virtual Life was never their domain and already Second Life was doing pretty good business. It seems that Google want to make a Google World.

On first glance, Lively seems too similar to several existing (and very large) MMOs, making it an also-ran without a key market distinguisher to be truly compelling (besides being from Google). You can stream YouTube videos in these rooms and embed rooms on websites, and it’s got appealing cartoon visuals and a fairly intuitive interface, but that’s true of numerous online worlds already out there.
Of course Google is the Net’s dominant force, but then, that probably won’t matter to the tens of millions already happy in existing virtual worlds. Without some special magic that I’m not seeing as yet, it could easily wind up being a virtual world version of Google Video, easily eclipsed by the YouTube-level dominance of Habbo Hotel/Club Penguin/Gaia Online/etc.

PC Magazine:

Virtual reality is a little 2006, but Google is looking to give it a new spin with Lively, a new 3D ‘world’ that can be integrated with a number of online applications.

The Lively download is available now on Lively.com. Users can create “rooms” that can be embedded on blogs or Web sites and explored via avatars you create yourself.
