Pakistan in Olympics

by Mansoor Ehsan on July 31, 2008

Pakistani Olympic team today leaves for China for 2008 Olympics. Pakistan first partcipated in the olympics in 1948 , Quaid- e azam waved the team off in high spirits. The team then had participated in a total of 7 games, although the performance wasn’t extra ordinary but Pakistani hockey team had mangaed the 4th rank on the list. Its unfortunate how over the span of time sports in Pakistan has been considerably neglected. Nearly 60 years down the row Pakistan in the Olympics of 2008 will only participate in 3 games with a rather thin margin of getting ranked in the winner’s list .

It has become very important that focus should be kept in introducing and training different sports in Pakistan and that various sportsmen with different talents are encouraged to participate. One can only hope that next olympics bring about a significant participants from Pakistan encouraging sportsmanship in the contry . For now all the luck to the participants 2008.

Blast Outside Pakistani Consulate in Afghanistan

by MJK on July 31, 2008

Bush personally mentioned the name of Pakistan when blasts took place outside Indian consulate in Afghanistan. Therefore, we Pakistani’s now expect the same from him if he consider Pakistan its true ally in the War on Terror. Its his responsibility to order a probe into this incident.

HERAT, Afghanistan, July 31 (AFP) A small bomb exploded Thursday near Pakistan’s consulate in Afghanistan’s western city of Herat, injuring a policeman and a woman, police said. The bomb, attached to a bicycle, appeared to have been detonated remotely, deputy city police chief Ghulam Sarwar Haidary told AFP. “A bomb placed on a bicycle exploded near the Pakistan consulate. One policeman, guarding the consulate, and a woman passer-by were wounded,” the official said. The bomb caused little damage, blowing out some windows nearby. It was not known who was behind the blast and there was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Pakistani Government summoned Afghan embassy officials to lodge their protest.

Pakistan said Thursday it had summoned the Afghan ambassador to the foreign office to convey “grave concerns” over a bombing outside the Pakistani consulate in the western Afghan city of Herat. Afghan authorities said a policeman and a woman were wounded when a small bomb attached to a bicycle was remotely detonated Thursday near the consulate building. “The government of Pakistan condemns the bomb explosion outside its consulate in Herat,” the foreign ministry said in a statement. “The ambassador of Afghanistan is being summoned to the foreign office to convey the grave concerns of the government of Pakistan.” The statement said Pakistan “holds the government of Afghanistan responsible for the safety and security of its personnel in its embassy in Kabul and consulates in Herat, Kandahar, Jalalabad and Mazar-i-Sharif. “We hope that the government of Afghanistan will take its responsibility seriously

Want a british passport ? easy way to get it !

by Sana Saleem on July 30, 2008

Now an easy way to get a British passport !! STEAL IT !!.   An urgent inquiry has been launched in London after the 3000 blank passports and visas were stolen from a security van . This is a part of a series  of incidents involving government loss of personal data and documents including child benefits information and top secret intelligence files.

However , the Identity and Passport Service said the hi-tech embedded chip features on the e-passports meant they would be unusable. On the other hand security officers have claimed that they could be used for fraud and could be sold for over 2.5 million pounds.  This is high breech in security and a big blow for the foreign office , this could cause a high violation of law and order situation in britain . i hope they actually get the matter sought and not blame AL-qaeda  *as usual.

Karachi in Dark

by Sana Saleem on July 30, 2008

If i was to make a list of  ‘You know you are from karachi when ‘ , power failiure would top my list.  After 53 millimeters of rain karachi was back nder the dark . Power failure initially began when pouring started and went on to exceed 12 hours in most areas . To further add cherry on the cake water clogging was almost everywhere. uprisingle most of the water had dried out in the morning allowing people to actually drive rather then opting on ’sailing ‘ instead. Perhaps I should add ‘ you have actually wished you had a boat everytime it rained ‘ to my list too .  ooh and yeah Kesc being its usual faithful self actually blaked out 3 times while  I was writing this post . However one thing Kesc doesnt fail to do is report ‘ shortfall of energy’, it claims to be short of  500 megawatts while the total demand was at 2,350MW. Officials said they needed the 500MW supply from Wapda.

So here I am with deep appreciation regarding the placements of dustbins in Lahore’s market place. The initiative has been welcomed by enviromenalist and work is underway to promote its frequent use among peolple. Social mobilisers have been employed to encourage frequent use of the bins , and proper disposal and managment work has also be thought over.According to a recent survey by dawn the initiative has been welcomed by public but right now it seems that only the shopkeepers have been utilizing the facility . Obama in for cheap publicity ?

by Sana Saleem on July 29, 2008

It was indeed over thrilling to beat an amreeki by just one phrase ‘ you call us conservative extremist ? is that coming from a country where the nation is yet to witness its first President whose anything other then the stereotypical ‘white man’ ?.  Sad thing America is all up to change it this year , if its not Hillary it might just be Obama ?. What I fail to understand over and over again is the unusual hype Obama has been getting , specially when it comes to his stance on the war on terror being different than that of Bush ?. My apologies to those who think volunteering to kill innocent people in Pakistan will be different than killing people in Iraq . Or may be Obama’s tactics  aren’t much tactful anyway ? May be he is an opportunist? . Do not stare me down please ! isn’t the whole world suddenly showering its wrath on Pakistan ? * fact *, so why is Obama different ?.  Obviously there are good and bad things about everyone , and so there are some pretty ‘intellectual’ stuff coming in from Obama also , specially about holding talks with President of Iran e.t.c .

So what’s our fault Mr.Obama- almost-president-of the-unitedstates ? Is it that we promised to be the allies of the country you wish to head?  *hmm * INDEED it is !.  Dont listen to me or the likes of me please , but try living up to your image Mr.Almost-president-of-the- US, BE DIFFERENT ? can you ?

Patriotism ? Too little too late!

by Sana Saleem on July 29, 2008

Patriotism has been made a term better suited in books and historical events. I have always laid emphasis on the condition of the country and the role of the youth.  Perhaps its because am selfish and the only aspect I want to see life in is where I have my fair share. Its extremely thrilling to break rules and to get  high by living on the edge, and why not ? its not necessarily to become a ‘lakeer ka fakeer’ now is it ? .So let me say it now as I might not be able to say it again , sometimes in life its important to stick by the fundamentals  else one deviates from the path so much that there is hardly anything to come back to. What compelled me to say this was this news in breif I read :

319 deportees arrive from Turkey

LAHORE, July 28: A group of 319 people deported from Turkey arrived here on Monday.

Among them was Mohammad Qasim with a bullet still in his leg indicating his sufferings as an illegal alien. “Now I know that there is no place like home. Pakistan is truly a heaven on earth,” said 20-year-old Qasim, who had paid Rs300,000 to a human trafficker in Gujranwala three months ago to go to Greece.

Thank god I don’t need a bullet in my leg to realize that ! * phew*.  The lesson here is simple ‘ one in hand is better than two in the bush’ , learn to be happy with what you have and where you belong as there is nothing more satisfying then to cherish self empowerment.

Karzai got Loose Motions-ISI Blamed

by MJK on July 29, 2008

I wont be surprised if i read this story on the whole Indian news channels attributing the source to Afghan Intelligence, whom Indians consider, the most accurate source of information.

Afghan Intelligence and Indian Embassy leaves no stone unturned in blaming ISI for their problems and failures. I think if they invested the time they spend in blaming on the improvement of their working, the world would have been a much better place and Karzai would have been able to claim his rule outside few areas of Kabul.
