Continuous Attacks by Militants on Police

PoliceI have always been advocating a strong police force which will in turn decrease the continuous reliance on our army for peacekeeping in our country. Since our police force has been deliberately kept under powered, it is mostly out gunned by militants. A strong police force with sophisticated weaponry will decrease the reliance on our military for normal operations.

The recent attacks on police posts in the suburbs of Peshawar, a provincial capital of NWFP, substantiate my point of view. Today, the daring attack on police mobile van is an example of the fact that militants are still taking their revenge on the police men and hence without a proper retaliation, the moral of this importance front line force will come down. In case of them backing out, Pakistan will have no other option but to bring in the armed forces, which will further aggravate the situation.

Therefore, our police force should be provided with bullet proof jacket and armed personnel carriers. Moreover, the number of police men manning the posts bordering Peshawar should be tripled from the current force of 15 to 20 policemen manning a post. Moreover, stern retaliation should be given for each and every attack on police party so that the militants realize that their single action will not go un noticed. Unless we strengthen our police force, our army will become the front line force and hence its image will be constantly deteriorate as witnessed in the past.

The example of developed nations is known to everyone where SWAT force are equipped with sophisticated systems and are highly mobile and where army is only called in extreme situations.

PESHAWAR, June 9 (AFP): Suspected Taliban militants killed four policemen in an ambush on their van in northwestern Pakistan despite peace talks in the troubled region, police said Monday. The attack happened on Sunday night in Matani, near Peshawar, the capital of North West Frontier Province, senior police investigator Nasirul Mulk told AFP. “The militants hid near a

gas station and opened fire on the police van. It was a surprise attack, the police party could not even retaliate because the hail of bullets was so sudden,” Mulk said. Four policemen were killed and a senior police officer was wounded in the attack, he said, adding that a hunt was under way for the killers. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.
