Budget 2008-09 - Maximum Relief for Poor?
|
I wonder what the term “Maximum relief for the poor” means to our Finance ministers or secretaries? Because every year i hear them saying that the budget is totally for the poor but somehow the rich always take advantage out of it while the poor get further poor. Our GDP per capita has risen to the $800 mark but our suicides have still increased, our remittances have increased yet the dollar has appreciated in our market. Thanks to the rising oil prices, at least our government and economists have something to blame for their blunders.
Zardari, the no elected and feudal leaders of the biggest feudal party of the country is making all the decisions for us as his Prime Minister lacks the will to use his judgment. The level of his incompetence can be judged from the fact that in every press conference, he refer his decisions to the De Facto leaders Asif Zardari. Even in the case of MQM corruption worth $7 billion, he had to wait for Asif Zardari to take the decision. In case you are not aware of the result of that case, it has been shelved away because Zardari can not afford to lose the support of MQM so $7 billion is the price the poor Pakistan paid for it. I am sure it is a national shame for everyone of us who never even dare to raise their voice against these grave injustices to us. To keep us busy, food crises emerged in Pakistan much earlier then the world food crises. Since the attention of the Pakistani’s needed to be directed away from Judiciary issues, power shortages were also created. Everyone is talking about a shortage of 3000 MW but no one has ever mentioned the fact that our line losses amount to 30 percent. With out total production of 16000 MW, this amount to around 4500 MW, more then enough to cover the current gap. So in reality Pakistan electricity shortage is also artificial so that more power thermal power plants can be installed on quick basis and some quick corruption can be done to recover the cost of elections. I wonder if we will ever wake up to see how our dictators and feudal leaders are playing with our lives? The Government has decided to bring the budget deficit below 6.5 percent during fiscal year 2008-09, and in 2009-2010 it will be brought down further, Federal Finance Minister, Syed Naveed Qamar told newsmen after a meeting with members of Overseas Investors Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OICCI) and Chief Executives of multinationals on Monday. To begin with, the Government would drastically cut non-development expenditure, rationalize development expenditure, initiate more saving schemes with high profit margin, and in the next phase new bonds would floated in the market. Tax base would also be broadened, along with rationalization of the taxes/ duties. He said the budget, which is scheduled to be announced on June 07, would bring maximum relief to the poor. “ We will give direct relief in cash or kind to those below the poverty line”, he said. National Finance Award would be announced in the budget and the provinces would be requested to nominate their members to finalize this document. The Government would take all the major political parties/groups on board in the formation of the budget, he said (Source:Dawn) |

hey Junaid, thanks for the compliments. Though i didn’t notice any change but the readers are better judges. Speaking of the budget, seems like we are back to square one… in the 90’s era. The conditions have worsen with food, electricity, water crisis and the future gas crisis (yeah u have my word we’ll soon hear that too). The loadshedding is worse in karachi…. in the last 24 hours we had 12 hour loadshedding and that’s the reason i’m blogging less often, the other reason is my pathetic isp.
I just take a look at this site and is pretty cool especially the goes wid the blog title. I would love to write for this site but since due to uncertain conditions i won’t be able to post regularly… it would be once in a while prolly still, i like to be part of ur team.
Keep up the good work (Y)

About load shedding, i have heard that situation is worse in Karachi but i never imagined that it would be 12 hours per day. This is too much!
The worst part of all this crises is that the elite class of our society is least bothered and the only people suffering are the poor.
It is in knowldege of most of the people that Pakistan is very much rich country in Coal reserves. The only lacking thing is its proper utilization due to incompetent beaurocracy to take decision for the best interest of pakistan without thinking of their commission and exploring every possibility to generate some corruption avenues for the haves.
That’s the irony of this country. We have so much but still we are in such a bad situation.
Well don’t you think that it’s us who are responsible for having all these bad siutations and things occouring in our country? We should ask this question to ourself that whom we voted for and what kind of people we elect who then decide the future of whole population of Pakistan.
Jabbar most of us didn’t vote at all and the people to whom i would have preferred to vote stayed out of the elections as well. The masses had no other option.
