Quit Smoking

A new study found out that quitting smoking is easy if done in groups rather then trying the traditional methods of chewing gums and nicotine patches etc. The study concluded that smoking cessation programmes work best if followed in groups and clusters rather then on individuals.

The study by Dr. Nicholas Christakis of Harvard Medical School and James Fowler of the University of California, San Diego, followed thousands of smokers and nonsmokers for 32 years, from 1971 until 2003, studying them as part of a large network of relatives, co-workers, neighbors, friends and friends of friends.

Elaborating further details, the study said that individuals know about the health hazards of smoking but if it also has serious affect on the social life of the smoker, he tends to quit it soon. Therefore, if the individual has a company where majority of the people around him are non-smokers, the individual feels left out and hence tends to seriously contemplate on quitting it.
