UN Peace Chief Irresponsible Statement on Pakistan Peace Deal

Read the following story first as it just appeared in the world news:

KABUL, May 22 (AFP): The UN peacekeeping chief said Thursday the world body will “watch closely” a peace deal between Pakistan’s new government and pro-Taliban militants in a troubled region of the country. Speaking during a visit to Afghanistan, United Nations Under Secretary General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Marie Guehenno said the two countries must work together to tackle extremism. Asked about the deal in Pakistan’s northwestern Swat Valley, about 90 kilometres from the Afghan border, Guehenno said it could “only be judged on the impact it has on security.” “We will watch closely the situation in the area concerned and make sure that the situation does not deteriorate on the other side of the border,” he told reporters. Guehenno said the stability of the two countries was linked. “The two countries have vital interests in moving together, in addressing the problems that affect them both …,” he said

I don’t think the UN Peacekeeping chief should link security in Afghanistan with the peace deals stuck in Pakistan. It was not Pakistan whom the United States and its allies contacted before attacking Afghanistan and occupying it till date. Even the United Nations itself was bypassed for the Afghan War and hence the UN Chief should not link the deterioratting situation in Afghanistan with the peace deal in FATA. Pakistan is a soverign country and it has its right to work for the betterment of its country and to bring peace in its tribal areas. It is the same right based on which American went on a global rampage to destabilize so many countries and are occupying them illegally till date. The war in Iraq and Afghanistan are fought on the same pretext of making America secure and hence if they can think of their people, it is the fundamental right of Pakistan to take steps for increasing security in its own country.

Pakistan should raise this issue in the United Nations and request the UN Peacekeeping Chief to retract his statement. Linking the two countries is in itself a very dangerous scenario as it provides the American alliance with a pretext to launch operations in our tribal areas.
