Don’t forget to move your clock 1 hour ahead

by Mansoor Ehsan on May 31, 2008

As part of energy saving measures, government decided to move national standard time 1 hour ahead. So, from June 1 Pakistan Standard Time would be +6GMT. Daylight saving time is not absolutely new concept in Pakistan. It was previously adopted sometimes in 2001 or 2002. Since summers have enough light in the mornings it is quite logical to move the clocks ahead to save the light for domestic use in the evenings. People would have more time to shop and exercise hence DST can have good effect on health and economy.

Controversies are also attached with DST. Most of the people in our country may not go (initially) with the national clock since they are not used to this system. This may create problems for some. I was eagerly inquisitive about prayer timings (since prayer timings are attached with sun) of my local mosque but molvi saab doesn’t seem to be interested in it and no announcement has come after any prayer which has left me thinking that how much participation do we make in national concerns which effect individuals.

Interestingly there will be no 00:00:00 on June 1; instead the first hour of June 1 will be 01:00:00

On the lighter side DST has lots of jokes associated with it. Here are few :)

Tell us what do you think on DST in Pakistan? Do you have anything interesting to share?

Pakistan Economic Outlook 2008-09 - State Bank of Pakistan Report

by MJK on May 31, 2008

I just came across the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Third Quarterly Report on the Pakistan Economy. The report is a bit scary specially when you look at the decreasing GDP growth percentage and the increase trade deficit and inflation. The report predicts that the inflation will remain in double digits in 2008-09 while the GDP Growth rate will remain in between 5%-6%.

State Bank of PakistanThe full summary of the report can be find on the website of State Bank of Pakistan by clicking here. The page is in PDF format so please click of you have pdf reader installed on your machine. The complete report can be found by clicking here.

Ansar Burney Kicked Out of India

by MJK on May 31, 2008

I was wondering how he will be feeling when the very country for whose spies he worked so hard to get released kicked him out of india. That is how you are compensated when you work for the very country which kill your cricket fans dubbing them agents and you work for the release of its spies who killed dozens of innocent Pakistani’s. At least i thought he deserved what he got from India.

Keep going Ansar Burney and work hard to give Kashmir to Indian’s after Kashmir Singh and that is what you will get from India.

ISLAMABAD, May 30: Former federal minister for human rights Ansar Burney, who got Indian death-row prisoner Kashmir Singh released and repatriated to India and the execution of another death-row convict, Sarabjeet Singh, delayed, was deported from New Delhi on Friday night, television reports said.
The Online news agency quoted sources here as saying that Mr Burney had been sent back from the Indira Gandhi International Airport by an Emirates flight to Dubai because of a ‘lookout’ notice against him.

Swinje Valley, Pakistan

by Mansoor Ehsan on May 31, 2008

Swinje is a less explored valley in Pakistan with great beauty of its own…green grass carpets all around the flooring with yellow and red flowers garnished  with water streams running across from white snowy mountains you seem to land in a paradise.

Google Android Powered Phone - First Glimpses

by MJK on May 30, 2008

Google Android

Google gave the first glimpse of Android powered phone in a Developers Conference where a crowd of over 3000 software developers were present.

The Google Android Phone seemed much like the enhanced version of iPhone and since iPhone is also planning to come up with open source software, i don’t think Google will be able to capitalize this thing. The Google Initiative to build an open source mobile platform for developers is what will bring the real change in the industry. One thing that is certain now is that the mobile phones will never be the same after the full release of Google Android Phone because the open source software will change the whole dynamics of the industry. Even the concept of introducing advertisements into the mobile will also bring down the potential princes of different products and provide the much needed steam to the mobile software development industry.

SAN FRANCISCO – Google kicked off its Google I/O developer’s conference here with an update on several of its Web-related initiatives and a flashy demo of its Android software for mobile devices.A prototype phone from an unnamed manufacturer was shown running Android software during the keynote. The device featured a touch screen display and a startup screen full of colorful icons for launching programs and Web services, such as Gmail, with the touch of a finger.A quick flick of the finger from a status bar brings up pending actions such as an imminent appointment or unread e-mail. New American Revelation (lies) About Al Qaeda and Iran

by MJK on May 30, 2008

American government is a strange government. They think that the only smart people are available in their administration and consider all others as stupid and idiots. The recent statement by Americans claiming that Iran and Al Qaeda in involved in secret talks for the release of the sons of Al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden. I wonder if the Americans are so good in their intelligence that they can even track the secret talks of Al Qaeda and Iran then why they fail in finding Osama Bin Laden till date? And the irony of the matter is that the so called Bin Laden emerges where ever Americans want to send their occupational forces. First it was Afghanistan and then Iraq and now Iran. Even the so called Al Qaeda is also present in our tribal areas because US is also interested in getting into these areas.

I wonder if Bush has ever checked his White House completely because some day Osama might emerge there if the Americans have to bomb it to make a new palace.

NEW YORK: US said that Al Qaeda has approached the Iranian officials for release of the two sons of Osama bin Laden besides others kept in captivity in Iran.
US secret agencies said that Al Qaeda held talks with the Iranian officials for the release of these leaders, but there was no such report that Iran was setting free the captive leaders of Al Qaeda.
US officials said that Iran beginning talks with Al Qaeda was worrisome, as whatever might be the Iranian aims behind these talks, US was quite ignorant about it. It may be recalled that the two sons of Osama bin Laden were taken into Iranian custody in 2003. (The News)

Vision goes Bionic

by MJK on May 30, 2008

Fancy seeing the way the terminator sees? scanning suspects for arms without any heavy mechanics without letting anyone know! Or high resolution images like that of the Robocop with calculations as to a bullet shot at which angle would yield how much results! That’s not just limited to movies anymore. You could actually help yourself have your vision modified to your convenience; so be the terminator, the Robocop or whichever sci-fi mechanical hero that you fancy being, thanks to engineers working on organic contact lenses. Scientists have taken the first step toward creating digital contact lenses that can zoom in on distant objects and display useful facts.

For the first time, engineers have installed an electronic circuit and lights on a regular contact lens. The prototype they created does not actually light up or display information. But it proves that it is possible to build an electronic lens that is safe to wear and doesn’t obstruct vision.

This has been made possible by grafting and integrating tiny electrical circuits into contact lenses (made of organic material that’s suits human body and is safe enough). The task was extremely difficult seeing that the circuits had to be built in accordance to the thickness of contact lenses, having to be built from only a few nanometers thick metal, and making sure that the circuits do not alter the nature of the contacts in being suitable for the human eye considering other sensitivities related to such human-related inventions. The invention was tested on rabbits and they showed no problems. The image here shows the “bionic lens” placed in the eye of a rabbit.

Eventually, the technique could yield a plethora of gadgets. Perhaps drivers and pilots could see their direction and speed projected across their view, or people could surf the Web without looking at an external device’s screen. Video gamers could immerse themselves in game landscapes directly in front of their eyes. Maybe the technique could even create sight aids for visually-impaired people.

Read the entire article at LiveScience

Such inventions and others like these can bring about a lifestyle revolution in the human race, a revolution depicted only in Hollywood till now. A lot more than how much we imagine is possible and someone might as well be working on it. Who would have imagined having a heart transplant back in the 15th century, though the concept might have been present, or performing brain surgery on an awake patient! The future holds a lot in itself when it comes to the very fascinating field of medicine and biological engineering, potentially realizing dreams that many of us have not even seen.

(The project was led by Harvey Ho, a former graduate student of Parviz’s now working at Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore, Calif., who presented the results at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ international conference on Micro Electro Mechanical Systems in Tucson, AZ.)

Von Karman Vortex

by MJK on May 30, 2008

During my usual study of scientific material on the internet, I came across this so very interesting phenomenon of ‘Von Karman Vortices’, and was compelled to share it with everyone, though many of you would already be familiar with the concept.

A Kármán vortex street is a repeating pattern of swirling vortices caused by the unsteady separation of flow over bluff bodies. (A vortex (pl. vortices) is a spinning, often turbulent, flow of fluid. Any spiral motion with closed streamlines is vortex flow. The motion of the fluid swirling rapidly around a center is called a vortex) - Wikipedia.com

Relative motion between an object and a fluid is common occurrence. Simple examples are the motion of a plane in flight or the wind blowing on an obstacle. Obstacles disturb the flow and create particular shapes in their wakes. This phenomenon can be easily observed behind piers of a bridge, where eddies appear and are blown by the stream.

This wake might be complex depending on the shape of the obstacle. In order to understand this phenomenon, studies are done on a simple case: a two-dimensional flow past a circular cylinder. This case illustrates Strouhal instability and the particular wake known as Von Karman Vortex Street. It is a succession of eddies created close to the cylinder that break away alternatively from both sides of the cylinder. Vortices are emitted regularly and rotate in opposite senses.

A von Karman vortex street can be seen in the wake of different shaped objects, especially cylindrical objects. The vortex street is a visualization of interesting fluid flow events, including vortices, and also provides an aesthetically appealing image. Von Karman vortex streets are so common, in fact, that satellites have captured images of naturally occurring vortex streets in the wake large objects on Earth.

Clouds make the vortices visible. The center of each vortex is clear, researchers say, because the rotating motions cause some wind to blow vertically, breaking up the otherwise solid deck of clouds.

It is also believed that insects take advantage of the energy from the vortices of the von karman vortex streets that form around their wings during flight. Insects rotate their wings before beginning the return stroke so that their wings are at an angle from 45 degrees to 90 degrees to the vortex and are lifted by the eddies of air. Vortices usually just create drag; however, this method used by insects can recapture some of the energy and use it to improve speed and maneuverability.

We often come across different formations of clouds during cyclones and other weather conditions, but I have never seen something so beautiful before. Once again, it leaves man in wonder of the magnificence and beauty of God’s creation. No doubt nature holds in it beauty that man cannot beat with his creations, and karman vortices are nature’s beauty.

Phenomena that we explain in labs, conducting experiments within little tanks and glass sheets, nature exhibits with such magnificence that makes us submit to the nature’s powers, and admit that we cannot compete with it.

Abdul Qadeer Khan is Pakistan’s Hero

by MJK on May 30, 2008

AQNow that Abdul Qadeer Khan has came out in public and informed the whole world that the confessions he gave were for the interest of the country and under pressure from the Musharraf led government, things are pretty much clear to everyone. We all know what has actually happened and being a Pro Pakistani, i would prefer not to draw any inferences and harm the interest of my country in the process unlike GEO Tv, which would love to malign Pakistan to gain popularity.

At least keeping in mind the number of lies and the false promises Musharraf and Chaudhries of Gujrat made to the nation, i would never believe them and even a single statement by Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan is enough to prove to me that he is innocent and was implicated to save a much bigger lobby. I hope he is not harmed by his rivals and the rivals of our nation.

Let’s hope he will be freed soon and be made an honorary Minister of State for Technology.

ISLAMABAD, May 29: Nuclear scientist Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan has expressed regret over his confession made in 2004 and alleged that he has been ‘betrayed by his friends’ who had promised that nothing wrong would happen to him and he would live a respectable life.
In the first detailed interview since he was put under a virtual house arrest, Dr Khan said he had been made a ‘scapegoat’ and he had made the confession in the larger interest of the country.
“I think the confession was my mistake,” he told DawnNews TV channel on Thursday.
In reply to a question, he revealed that he had been given a written confessional statement to read. “I should not have read the written statement. I should have spoken in my own words and changed things,” he said. Continue…
