G3 - Pakistan Army Standard Assault Rifle

Today i am going to explain the general description of the Assault rifle used by the Pakistan Army i.e G3. The G3 was originally produced by the German Company Heckler and Koch (HK). Due to its simplicity and cheap manufacturing, it was adopted as the standard assault rifle by more than 50 countries including Pakistan, Iran, Greece, Turkey, Mexico. It is licensed produced in Pakistan, Turkey and Iran.

Technical Description

The G3 works on the mechanism of ” Roller Locked Delayed Blowback”. In simple words the pressure generated by the firing cartridge pushes back the bolt which ejects the cartridge and loads a new round. The receiver of this gun is made up of stamped sheets made up of steel.

It is a select fire rifle i.e it has an option of firing in single shots and fully automatic mode. It has iron sights for aiming. Early versions had wooden butts and handgaurds, but the new ones have plastic handgaurds and butts. This rifle is chambered for 7.62×51mm Nato cartridge (energy genreated by this round is approximatley 2980-3340 EO, Joules).

Drawbacks

There are two main drawbacks. 1: This gun is too heavy. While most modern assault rifles weighs no more than 3.5kg, its weighs a hefty 4.5kg. This weight proves difficult in wartime situation when u are carrying heavy bag packs and u have to walk miles holding it. This is main reason why it got replaced by other rifle (still being used e.g in Pakistan and Iran).

2: Second big drawback is its cartridge (7.62X51MM). The gun is uncontrollable in fully automatic firing because of its powerful bullet as the recoil generated by its bullet is too much to accurately aim and fire it in fully automatic mode.

Specification

Calibre: 7.62×51mm NATO

Length: 1025mm

Weight:4.5kg

Magazine capacity: 20 rounds

Rate of fire: 700-800 rounds per minute RPMG3 Picture

i agree that the gun is a bit too heavy, i experienced its weight while holding it with my arms starched fully, as a punishment during a NCC course in my collage days, my hands got numb within 10 mins or so. But firing it was a pleasure…

Ya Far Star, i have had an opportunity to use this fire this rifle but i did it while lying on the ground as i was advised by the instructor in this manner. I wish i had attended the NCC as well. Personally speaking i found the Ak-47 much easier to use as compared to G3. An article by Hamza Khan on the Ak-47 has just been uploaded. Keep dropping your feedback.

I was stationed in Afghanistan in ‘07 and from my experience with Pakistani soldier, I personally think Pakistani Army is long overdue to upgrade their standard assault rifles. This gun have outrun its terms of use and Pakistani army really needs to upgrade. Simplicity and cost effectiveness of a soldiers main weapon doesn’t constitutes a viable reasoning for a military to make it their main armament for their military personal.

All in all, I have nothing but positives to say about Pakistan’s Military.

I would suggest Pakistani Army to buy new and latest assault rifles instead of using G-3’s to make the performance of our soldiers more efficient in any warfare situation.

i suggest pakistan high command should replace g3 with g36 to increase performance of our soldier.g3 is long and heavy weight rifle which is not good for a soldier in war situation.

G-3 is no doubt a very good rifle, its 7.62 cartridge, fine gas operating system, reliable machinery and many other features. But i m in the favour that G-3 should now be replaced. I have fired it many times on both auto and semi auto modes. It is not very accurate rifle. U cant fire it accurately on auto mode, all the bullets dont go in bull. It is best in hot cliamtes but it will freeze in cold climates of Kargil and Siachin. after firing 5 or 6 rounds, it will jam.
So G-3 should be replaced with Chinese CQs or G-36.

Actually, it is not a correct statement tha G3 is only made for hotter climates. G3 is designed by HK(Germany)to be used in the freezing European climates and it was a standard NATO issue and it has been thoroughly tested and proved its mattel in the freezing European Climates. Only Drawback G3 has as correctly mentioned above is its whopping weight of 4.5 KG and its huge recoil while firing in the Auto mode which certainly effects its accuracy. However, G3 is extremely accurate over 800 Meter in a Semi Automatic mode. Lot of designated marksman in various police and SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics)teams use G3 for sniping. I think G3 should be retired as standard issue and be replaced with more lighter weapon for Pakistan Army either Chinese QBZ-97A or QBZ-95A would suffice. G3 fitted with a tactical scope should only be issued to every designated marksman in every Pakistani Platoon as a long Range Sniper Rifle.

G3 is the best assault rifle in the world.?)because no rifle is compared to it.;its firing mechanism is the key for no bump.

I have used nearly every kind of weapons, in modern warfare we do not need g3 to be so heavy even though our soilders are trained to use them accordingly , we need to make its barrel a bit shorter and light weight , ajust the recoil accordingly ,inshallah it will be much better , second in every combats we need group of 12 soilders, 3/3 teams with guns who have higher rate of fire , so for that we need guns like m16 for small task speaciall operations in every patlon.
Pakistan needs a speacial task highly equiped+trained to maximum human extent force for modern speaciall operations rather then old cammandos system.

Regards.

Yah G-3 is best for every weather and used friendly

There is no doubt the weapon is good. Getting few of our nation doesn’t even count, still you are the hunter. Rubbing more and firing less is like a pride that we see in the culture, But rich nations cannot afford it . The Rifle is heavy but for poor nations more weight doesn’t matter , Not getting killed in battle from few hundred yards is hardly a mistake.but we are it’s biggest producer in the world.Infact , this weapon should be banned .
