Yvonne Ridley Vs American Ambassador Anne Patterson

by Crackerpotato on February 9, 2010

I just came across this article written by Yvonne Ridley to share her views on the way American Ambassador to Pakistan Anne Patterson has been acting and how her behavior has resulted in bringing down the image of America in Pakistan. She is the worst enemy of Americans since she is leading the campaign to further malign the American reputatiton in Pakistan.  Here it goes!

“Everyone had something to say, everyone that is except the usually verbose US Ambassador Anne Patterson who has spent the last two years briefing against Dr Aafia and her supporters.

This is the same woman who claimed I was a fantasist when I gave a press conference with Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Imran Khan back in July 2008 revealing the plight of a female prisoner in Bagram called the Grey Lady.

She said I was talking nonsense and stated categorically that the prisoner I referred to as “650” did not exist.

By the end of the month she changed her story and said there had been a female prisoner but that she was most definitely not Dr Aafia Siddiqui.

By that time Aafia had been gunned down at virtually point blank range in an Afghan prison cell jammed full of more than a dozen US soldiers, FBI agents and Afghan police. [click to continue...]

Life is A Paradox

by Sakina Younus on February 9, 2010

A friend of mine had her dholki on Friday night. Right before I left, my mother told me that there had been 2 bomb blasts in Karachi. Some people were stepping into a new and wonderful life together, while others had had their lives so prematurely and barbarically ended. Families were irrevocably torn apart for some; others were just initiating the ceremonies of becoming one.

Prices of so many commodities have been hiked to an unbelievably high level in our country. The number of people who can continue living their lives like they used to is shrinking day by day. And it is just no point talking about those who were already way in over their heads! Even if I want to, I don’t think I could imagine the ceaseless misery of the poor people and the relentless drudgery from dawn till dusk. All this courtesy of our supremely beloved government. On the other end of the spectrum, there are people who are also enduring relentless drudgery—but for the sake of such poor people. They are fighting and protesting for their sakes. Charities and fund-raisers are being organized and efforts are being undertaken to provide these people with subsidized rations, free education and medical care. [click to continue...]

Life in Denmark-As seen by an Expat Pakistani Woman

by Guest Writer on February 7, 2010

When i first arrived here in Copenhagen in the spring of 2003, I was taken aback by how cold it was even in April. Coming from Karachi where the warm sun keeps us relaxed and at ease, the cold here made me cringe. Its no doubt that Copenhagen is a beautiful city and that I realized in late spring and summer when everything looked so fresh and colorful.

It is never easy to move countries, especially when you are so well settled in your own comfortable surroundings. It is one thing to move because of circumstances or career but moving because you got married to someone who happens to live in another country is quite another matter. Firstly because you enter in a new relationship that is one adjustment, on top of that you are in a new and foreign country. That makes the challenge even greater. And marriage is one such relationship which makes you do things which you think you would never do, in my case it was leaving Pakistan. [click to continue...]

New Petroleum Prices – Burden The Masses Part –III

by Usman Zahid on February 4, 2010

The current government of PPP has continued its one tradition of dropping bombs on the first day of every month. On 1st January, 2010 the government enhanced the gas and electricity prices and on the 1st February, 2010 the government increased the petroleum prices by a whooping Rs 6.1 per litre for Super Petrol i.e. an increase of 9.37% and for High Speed diesel the price has raised to Rs 71.89 per litre from Rs 68.56 per litre an increase of 4.86%.

The increase in the petroleum prices will have an extremely negative impact on the masses especially after the electricity and gas prices had been raised a month back. The country’s economy is already shrinking and the growth has been shadowed by the political instability and now such absurd increase in the petroleum prices will seriously hamper the industrial and domestic structure of the country. Dr. Aafia Siddiqui Charged!

by Usman Zahid on February 4, 2010

The much awaited and as expected the decision on Dr.Aafia Sidqui was given by the 16 member Jury at New York. The jury found Dr. Aafia being guilty of seven charges; mainly revolving around the murder attempt of U.S servicemen. The decision was twenty-four hours delayed by the jury, for the reason best being known to them and between the preceding two members of the jury were also changed. During the case two (2) witnesses were brought to the court by Dr. Aafia’s lawyers and also a videotape and the jury was also told that the forensic tests proved that Dr. Aafia had no indulgence in the case and that the case was made on false ground.

The charges against Dr. Aafia were that she tried to kill U.S Marines and FBI inspectors in Afghanistan, during an investigation by using rifle M-4 of an American soldier. Dr. Aafia was being investigated at that time by the Americans on for having some secret chemicals and the method of making a dirty bomb. [click to continue...]

Punjab Assembly demands to ban late-night packages from telcos; do you agree?

by Mansoor Ehsan on February 3, 2010

Punjab Assembly has passed a resolution, demanding federal government to ban late night packages  introduced by telecom companies. The base point for the resolution was to save future of youth who presumably are the major targets of these late night packages. Almost all of the mobile network operators offer cheap rate on-net calls these days.

The demand was raised in Punjab Assembly’s session in a resolution presented by Samina Khawar Hayat, an MPA of PML (Q). The resolution recommends that the federal government direct mobile companies not to promote “cheap rate, late night packages that alter societal tendencies”. The document says, “Because of such mobile packages … the young generation, particularly students, remain busy texting and talking over the phone the entire night, without caring for their studies, health and sleep. These packages are not in line with social and moral values and customs. A ban should be imposed on all such packages. The resolution was passed unanimously, with the speaker praising Samina for tabling the document.

How do you take on this resolution? Should such packages be banned in your opinion? How does such packages effect the youth? Post us your comments and experiences!

Karachi Champions League (KCL) : Latif Launches Mega Cricket Tournament

by Owais Ehsan on February 3, 2010

With Pakistan Cricket going through endless humiliations, starting from the Poor form of the team, Ipl Snub, Afridi’s antics at Perth - there is at least some positive News coming out. Rashid Latif & Karachi City Government have join hands to launch the most lucrative club tournament in Pakistan’s History. Latif has long been thinking of launching a city-based Twenty20 league but finally decided it was time to act when Pakistan’s leading cricketers were snubbed at an Indian Premier League (IPL) player auction in Mumbai last month.

The Karachi Champions League, a Twenty20 league, for the leading clubs of the city will begin next week with Rs 10 million (around USD 117,200) as the top prize for the winners. The tournament, a brainchild of Latif and the Rashid Latif Cricket Academy (RLCA) will feature a number of Karachi-based international players, as well as a host of domestic cricketers. Younis Khan, Shahid Afridi, Khalid Latif, Fawad Alam, Khurram Manzoor and Sarfraz Ahmed, among others, will be playing.

“It was an old idea of mine, one that I had been working on. I am a big follower of English football and I love the history of clubs over there, like Chelsea and Fulham. We have so many old clubs in Karachi and we need to revive that club culture once again here.” [click to continue...]
